say vs tell 의 문법적 차이
목적어(사람) 유무에 따른 전달 동사 선택표입니다.
say (that...)
- •He said that he was tired.
- •사람 목적어 없음
tell someone (that...)
- •He told me that he was tired.
- •tell + me/you/him 필수
A. 간접화법의 시제 후퇴 원칙 (Shift back in time)
전달하는 시점이 과거(said/told)일 경우 전달되는 내용의 동사는 한 시제 과거로 후퇴합니다 (am/is -> was, have -> had, will -> would).
Direct: 'I'm tired.' -> Reported: He said that he was tired.
직접: '나 피곤해.' -> 간접: 그는 피곤하다고 말했습니다.
Direct: 'I have bought a new car.' -> She said she had bought a new car.
직접: '나 새 차 샀어.' -> 그녀는 새 차를 샀다고 말했습니다.
Direct: 'I will phone you tomorrow.' -> He said he would phone me tomorrow.
직접: '내일 전화할게.' -> 그는 내일 전화하겠다고 말했습니다.
Direct: 'I can't come.' -> She said she couldn't come.
직접: '나 못 가.' -> 그녀는 갈 수 없다고 말했습니다.
Direct: 'I don't like my job.' -> He said he didn't like his job.
직접: '난 내 일이 안 맞아.' -> 그는 그의 일이 마음에 안 든다고 말했습니다.
B. 전달동사의 구별 (say vs tell)
say 뒤에는 사람 목적어를 쓰지 않지만(said that...), tell 뒤에는 반드시 들은 사람(told me/him/them)을 씁니다.
He said that he was tired. (not He told that...)
그는 피곤하다고 말했습니다.
He told me that he was tired. (not He said me...)
그는 내게 피곤하다고 말했습니다.
What did she say to you? (say to somebody)
그녀가 당신에게 무슨 말을 했나요?
What did she tell you?
그녀가 당신에게 무엇을 말해주었나요?
They said goodbye and left.
그들은 작별 인사를 하고 떠났습니다.
C. 접속사 that 의 생략
간접화법절을 이끄는 접속사 that은 흔히 생략할 수 있습니다.
He said he was tired.
그는 피곤하다고 말했습니다.
She told me she didn't have any money.
그녀는 내게 돈이 없다고 말했습니다.
They said they were going to live in America.
그들은 미국에 가서 살 것이라고 말했습니다.
I told him I was leaving.
나는 그에게 떠난다고 말했습니다.
